Our Roots of Belonging

By June 30, 2023No Comments

The New Moon in Cancer emerges at 19.32BST on Monday 17 July at 24 Cancer.

A Cancer New Moon always holds the potential of sweetness. This one is no different, holding the potentials for harmonious emotional connection, a sense of belonging, the feel-good of pleasure and appreciation for life. Cancer is the sign of home and family, mother-child connection, our need for nurture, sustenance, and shared roots with others. Intuition and gut feeling are strong in Cancer season. It’s time to honour your irrational knowing, feminine instinct and the nudges of gut feelings.

Underlying its more nourishing energies, this New Moon has a flavour of power given and taken. It calls us to look at where we give power away to ‘authority’, particularly in family relationships, or to the ‘nanny state’. Or where we hold too much responsibility through control and therefore cannot open to, receive and experience the nurture we need.

With the Sun & Moon opposing Lord of the Underworld Pluto, now returned to Capricorn, we are called once more to deconstruct the elements of power/powerlessness that keep us locked up from an authentic free-flowing life. This may require you to set clearer boundaries, grounded by new values, or it may call for a loosening up. The Capricorn/Cancer axis represents the parental synergy and qualities of archetypal Mother & Father: love and nurture, strength and presence. Which do you need more of to integrate a new healthier way of being? Awakener Uranus in Taurus and Mystic Neptune retrograde in Pisces (with the Pluto opposition) are supporting a finer integration of maturity at this New Moon. It can be a gentle and insightful exploration of any underlying challenges, if you allow it to be.

Elias Lonsdale’s Star Destiny for degree of this New Moon ‘A flock of penguins on an icy beach’, takes this deeper. It speaks of a finer frequency of integration that serves our connection to humanity as family. “What we have been through with our extended family is distinctive. It marks us apart from others. We have gone further in very particular directions, which now seek to be fulfilled on a whole new level.’

This New Moon is a supportive invitation to let go of our attachments to ‘how it’s been’, to discover a more expansive integration of understanding and self-expression. ‘Now it’s time to face the unknown afresh, without the scaffold of knowing what we belong to.’ This is always a requirement of Pluto; that we face the fire of the phoenix to be born anew. This applies even to our roots of belonging. For ultimately, we belong to life itself, what some would call ‘the Divine’.

This New Moon is a potent marker in Pluto’s ongoing shift from Capricorn to Aquarius through to late 2024. Just as a tree is constantly bedding its roots in new ground so it can grow its canopy, we are required to expand in how we express, live from and therefore embody love and authenticity.
